Benn Glazier [weblog]

I've recently relocated to London from Sydney and I'll ramble about good food and drink around town, eclectic electronic music, absolutely anything to do with digital media, throw some sport (more than likely cricket) in and the odd personal experience — as seen through my camera lens.

Counting Down To The New Year…

Time to count down to 2009, and I’m going to do it with some of my favourite tunes of 2008. They don’t have to be new, or newly discovered – they could be re-discovered gems, or tracks that have been on high rotation for some time. In no particular order, let’s kick it off with a bit of Nina Simone.

Your Final Song?

Photo: Miss Aniela

What song would you want played at your funeral? OK, it’s a morbid question, but it is a certain event and it’s one party you wont be able to attend, but it’s a question that Get Physical recently asked of some of the world’s top DJs to come up with answer to. The result, a new compilation — ‘Final Song #1′.

The first volume has plenty of names, featuring the likes of Richie Hawtin, Laurent Garnier, Ricardo Villalobos, François K and DJ Storm. Each has also gone in completely different directions with their selections — DJ T. opts for the proto-ambient piano work of Erik Satie and Hawtin selects a beautiful number by Mark Pritchard which has incidentally been re-released on Hawtin’s own Plus 8 imprint in recent years.

Tracklist
01. Erik Satie – 1. Gymnopédie (Selected by DJ T.)
02. Rob Gallagher – Little One (Selected by Gilles Peterson)
03. Photek – Modus Operandi (Selected by Storm)
04. The Stranglers – Golden Brown (Selected by DJ Hell)
05. Cerrone – Supernature (Selected by Kevin Saunderson)
06. Radiohead – Sit Down Stand Up (Selected by Laurent Garnier)
07. Chloé – Paradise (Selected by Chloé)
08. The Beach Boys – ‘Til I Die (Selected by David Holmes)
09. Peggy Lee – Is That All There Is? (Selected by Ewan Pearson)
10. Inti Illimani – Caramba, Yo Soy Dueno del Baron (Selected by Ricardo Villalobos)
11. Link – Amenity (Selected by Richie Hawtin)
12. Pharoah Sanders – Astral Travelling (Selected by Francois K)
13. Brian Eno – An Ending (Ascent) (Selected by Coldcut)

So what will you have play for your last hurrah? Have your say.

Greg Wilson jammed a great selection of electrofunk, disco, house and everything in between at an outdoor bar gig in Bondi on a Thursday night. A hell of a treat for about 150 people who were there to check it out. Note the old Revox in the background of the above shot! He worked some slick edits and jams, including the bassline from Roxy Music’s “Love Is The Drug” with Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl”, Steve Wonder’s “Superstition” and even the 80s pop hit “Walk Like An Egyptian” by The Bangles.

The playing of such popular tracks for many might be a little droll, and ordinarily it would be for me, however it’s the pastiche – the edits, additions of drums, fusions of basslines and just doing things a little differently that adds to the appeal – think of someone like Richie Hawtin, but in this instance someone who doesn’t use minimal house and techno to create the blend of sounds and isn’t so heavily reliant on new technologies.

Top that all off with a supremely friendly crowd and the full seventeen minute Patrick Cowley mix of “I Feel Love” to close out, not to forget the Little Creatures Pale Ale available by the pint at the bar and you had a fine Thursday night of fun.

Where? John Tejada in LA.

John Tejada

Nice.. I forgot about this and it stayed draft for several months!

When you think of bustling cities for electronica, you think of the capitals in Europe. Outside of isolated incidents, L.A. has never been especially hospitable to thoughtful dance music, and by and large it still isn’t. But John Tejada has bucked that conventional wisdom for almost two decades.

The now-Van Nuys-based producer and DJ just released his 11th full-length album, “Where”, on his own Palette Recordings, and it’s an inviting, handmade musing on how a few finely honed moving parts can make idiosyncratic Detroit space-funk. We talked about the pleasures of a room full of tangled cables, the future of minimalism and the chance that L.A. can ever find its techno niche.

Here’s the full interview with John Tejada in the Los Angeles Times, featuring photography by yours truly.

The King Is Dead

I posted this video when John Howard lost office in Australia last year. It’s just as appropriate now as it was then. However, it might be that the 43rd President of the U.S. was ever only a court jester.
