Benn Glazier [weblog]

I've recently relocated to London from Sydney and I'll ramble about good food and drink around town, eclectic electronic music, absolutely anything to do with digital media, throw some sport (more than likely cricket) in and the odd personal experience — as seen through my camera lens.

Open Doors Can Be Fatal

Protect Bicyclists

As a cyclist, the opening door is one of your worst nightmares. You think you’re riding wide enough to avoid a swinging door and all of a sudden BANG! You’re flipping in the air and into the middle of the road into the path of a car.

Doors can be fatal for cyclists, and this campaign is trying to raise money in Chicago to inform motorists of the dangers their doors pose to cyclists.

Remember the old saying – “Look left, look right, look bike”? Perhaps it’s time for all motorists to remember it. Or for that fact, perhaps all motorists should be made to drive amongst peak hour traffic so that they understand what harm they often do to the commuting cyclist.

  1. Or just don’t ride in the door zone, and you won’t pick up a door prize.

Too true. I always give myself a metre and a bit or thereabouts to stay out of the zone – only if the cars behind you realised why you went so wide.

Always makes me laugh (and hopefully never wince) when you see all bike paths in Sydney next to parked cars. Sorry, but FAIL. I will not use for this exact reason.

  3. Especially when you’re riding in the lane, avoiding the bike “lane” in the door zone, and you read how Clover knows all about it, and built it that way anyway…

Yep, hear you there. I also try to stay out of the door zone, but can be really hard on some one way streets with arsehole car drivers up your backside. The Wilson St Bicycle Highway between Erskineville Rd and Burren St is one example.

Thanks for the pass on and permission to “Steal” Benn. Intend to get this up on my blog!
