Rambling and blogging for over 8 years, from good food and drink around town, eclectic electronic music, absolutely anything to do with digital media, throw some sport (more than likely cricket) in and the odd personal experience — as seen through my viewfinder.

Daniel Bell: The Nomad

One of my favourite musicians, Daniel Bell, one of the forefeathers of minimal techno and composer of some of my favourite cuts under the DBX monicker including “Losing Control”, “Phreak” and “Electric Shock” and the wonderful Elevate guise on Harmonie Park is
featured in Resident Advisor this week.

“Music has been a part of my life for 20 years,” he says. “I think as it’s maturing, it’s become even more inspirational, because there’s space for everything new. In previous years, there was always one sound that was really dominant. It was really hard to find space. But in the last couple years, it’s really opened up, and there’s lots of space for all the different approaches to this music. To me, it’s definitely as important as ever. Absolutely.”

DBX’s “Losing control”. Damn. That’s taken me waaaayy back… I first heard a twisted mix of that track at a forest party up near Byron Bay at about 4.30am, just before it started to get light. Totally caved my head in. Must have been close to 15 years ago?

Good thing I’ve cleaned up my act since then hehehe….

When you said 15 years ago, I said “No Way!”… but the track was released in 1994.

    Eek.

You should check his work on Accelerate - this plus Robert Hood’s “Minimal Nation”, along with the entire catalogue of works by Maurizio set the blueprint for minimal techno as we know it today.
