Your Ultimate Food Moment

A short motorbike ride from the centre of Hoi An led us to a hut-like building on stilts with a large decking area, all over water. Greeted by a middle-aged woman we were brought grilled prawns with lime, tamarind crab and lotus nut soup plus several other courses as we gazed across the Hoi An river in the midday sun - all the while consuming an icy cold Saigon Green beer, or three.

What’s your ultimate food moment? Here’s what Jamie Oliver, Bill Granger, Keith Floyd and even the Prince of Wales consider as their ultimate moments.

You forgot to add, a short motorbike with three people (one big Aussie man, one average Aussie woman, one tiny Vietnamese man!) on a 100cc!

Yeah, that was an awesome food experience. Almost at the opposite end of the dining spectrum from our recent excursion to Tets, but still pretty damn amazing. ;)

  2. I think that’s why it was even more amazing. Indeed a polar opposite to somewhere like Tetsuya’s - however with somewhere like Tets, there’s the hype, the name and the endless accolades, whereas we didn’t know where we were going, nor what it was like, apart from the fact that our guide said it was somewhere ’special’. Indeed it was, the only 3 customers there at lunchtime, and a bill that came to one tenth of what the degustation for one costs at Tets.

well i’m gonna sound like a bogan but when i think awesome food moment i’m thinkin this unassuming pizza joint on the east syd side of Crown St. i was with a starved liqoured up group of friends, and alot of places were closed to us… these guys took us under their wing. all the pizzas were acceptable but the meatlovers… my god. this mutha was perfect. so meaty so cheesy. it perfectly complemented the beers and the drunken haze.

the only thing that was missing was the tune ‘i wanna know what love is’ by Foreigner getting played. that would’ve been way outta hand…

One that springs to mind is myself and a few of the Jen crew cooking up an Indian feast after a lenghty session on the AEBC bowling greens. From spilling red lentils all over Surry Hills Coles (no, it’s not a good idea to play bowls in the aisles with plastic bags), to a couple of the guys being offered crytal meth in an Indian tobacconist on the way home, actually getting the food on the table was a mission. Once we did, it was possibly the most satisfying group meal I’ve had…
